The Electoral Commission of Uganda (EC) is a constitutionally established body responsible for organizing and conducting regular, free, and fair elections and referenda in Uganda. Established under Article 60 of the 1995 Constitution, the Commission ensures that electoral processes are conducted efficiently, professionally, and impartially.

Leadership and Structure

As of the latest information, the Commission is chaired by Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama. The leadership team also includes Deputy Chairperson Hajjat Aisha Lubega and Commissioners Peter Emorut, Justine Ahabwe Mugabi, Stephen Tashobya, Mustapha Ssebagala Kigozi, and Nathaline Etomaru. This team was sworn in on 17 January 2017 for a seven-year term, renewable once.

The Commission operates through a Secretariat headed by the Secretary to the Commission, supported by three directorates and twelve departments.

Recent Developments

In preparation for the upcoming 2026 general elections scheduled for 12 January 2026, the Electoral Commission has launched a strategic plan and roadmap. This roadmap aims to enhance operational efficiency, stakeholder awareness, and participation in the electoral process.
