Busoga Forestry Company Limited

Busoga Forestry Company Ltd (BFC) is a commercial forestry plantation company based in Jinja, Uganda. Established on March 14, 1996, BFC operates as a subsidiary of Green Resources AS (GRAS), a private Norwegian company specializing in forestation, carbon offsetting, and wood products across Africa .

Operations and Plantations

BFC manages two major forest plantations in Uganda:

• Bukaleba Forest Plantation: Located in Mayuge District on the shores of Lake Victoria, this plantation covers approximately 6,300 hectares, with around 4,300 hectares planted. The remaining area is allocated for conservation, infrastructure, and community activities. Bukaleba was Green Resources’ first plantation in Uganda and is fully planted. Management efforts focus on improving the quality of the standing stock through various silvicultural interventions .

• Kachung Forest Plantation: Situated in Dokolo District, Northern Uganda, this plantation spans just under 2,700 hectares, with around 2,000 hectares plantable. The focus here is on the production of sawlogs and utility poles. Due to its age class distribution, the plantation is in the early stages of commercial development .

Both plantations are established within government-owned Central Forest Reserves under 50-year renewable licenses granted by the National Forestry Authority (NFA) .

Products and Services

BFC produces a range of forest products, including:

• Sawn Timber: A complete range of sawn timber for internal building timbers and general carpentry.

• Utility Poles: Treated poles for power lines and telecommunications, using environmentally-friendly Copper Chrome Arsenate (CCA) preservative.

• Pallets: High-quality wooden pallets.

• Pine Seedlings: Production of Pinus Caribaea seedlings.

• Eucalyptus Clones: Production of hybrid Eucalyptus clones like Grandis Camaldulensis (GC) and Grandis Urophora (GU).

• Fencing Posts: Treated and untreated fencing posts (7ft & 10ft) .

The company operates a modern sawmill and pole treatment plant in Jinja, Uganda .

Community Engagement and Sustainability

BFC is committed to sustainable forestry practices and community development. The company allocates portions of its plantation areas for conservation and community activities. Additionally, BFC’s nurseries are certified by the Sawlog Production Grant Scheme (SPGS) for quality seedling production, supporting reforestation efforts and providing employment opportunities in the region .
