Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has expelled former Vice President Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi from the party, one day after he announced his resignation from the vice presidency and retirement from active politics and public service.
The decision was reached on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, during a meeting of CCM’s National Executive Council chaired by the party’s national chairperson, President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
CCM Secretary-General Dr Asha-Rose Migiro announced the decision to journalists in Dar es Salaam, saying the party had considered a disciplinary and ethics matter involving Nchimbi and reviewed reports presented before reaching its decision.
Migiro said the review established that Nchimbi had violated the CCM constitution and party regulations, leading to his expulsion from membership.
“The Central Committee discussed the disciplinary and ethical matter involving Emmanuel Nchimbi, and after considering all the available reports, it was established that the CCM Constitution and its regulations had been violated, and therefore Nchimbi has been expelled from membership,” Migiro said.
The party’s decision came a day after Nchimbi announced that he had written to President Hassan informing her of his decision to retire from politics and public service and to resign as Vice President with effect from September 4, 2026.
President Hassan subsequently accepted the resignation, according to a government statement, which said constitutional procedures would be followed to appoint another Vice President.
In his resignation statement, Nchimbi said he was fulfilling a commitment he had made to President Hassan before taking office: that he would step aside if she wanted a different person to serve as Vice President. He said he had become convinced that the President wanted a change.
Nchimbi, who previously served as CCM Secretary-General before becoming President Hassan’s running mate in the 2025 general election, was sworn in as Vice President on November 3, 2025. His resignation is due to take effect on September 4, after which the constitutional process of selecting his successor is expected to proceed.
